Marlborough Roads Recovery and Humes partner to repair Marlborough’s storm damaged roads
Marlborough Roads Recovery is a Joint venture between Fulton Hogan, HEB, Marlborough District Council and NZTA, Waka Kotahi established to repair the regions severely damaged roads following the July 2021 and subsequent weather events.
For the past three years, Jay Evans, Sales and Account Manager for Humes, along with the Humes Blenheim team, has supported and worked closely with the Marlborough Roads Recovery Team, supplying products to help them in their efforts to keep roads open across the Marlborough region.
Significant weather events in June and July 2025 caused extensive damage to infrastructure across the region, resulting in millions in repair costs and requiring a district-wide State of Local Emergency. The events triggered severe flooding and high groundwater levels, impacting roads, rivers, and sewage systems.
“The Marlborough Roads Recovery Team - a joint venture between NZ Transport Authority, Marlborough Roads, Fulton Hogan and HEB Construction - was set up in August 2021,” says Adam Hale, Operations Manager, Marlborough Roads Recovery. “Following the July storm, significant work to repair the network was - and is - being undertaken. It has been one of the largest roading recovery projects in the country and is jointly funded by NZ Transport Authority and the Marlborough District Council.”
"Jay and his team have been providing stormwater solutions and product for the Marlborough Roads Recovery Project. We have been working with him over the last few years on this project and he has become our ‘go to’ for finding solutions that work for the Marlborough Sounds, the main area where damage occurred. On occasion he has had to utilise the Humes engineering team to modify or create custom solutions to tailor to our needs.”
The Ronga Road Culvert upgrade: “The photos are of a recent job completed for Marlborough Roads Recovery,” says Jay. “The subcontractor was Simcox Construction, and this job was part of the Ronga Road Culvert upgrade in quite a remote part of the Sounds.”
