Engineering Resilience: CCC Styx Drain Naturalisation
Christchurch City Council’s Styx Drain Naturalisation project is a major stormwater and ecological enhancement initiative designed to improve waterway health, stormwater performance, and biodiversity across 300 hectares of new and existing development catchments. Humes partnered with Corde to deliver engineered precast solutions that enabled the successful transformation of the Styx waterway.

Engineered Precast Delivery
Humes has played a key role in Christchurch City Council’s Styx Drain Naturalisation project, a major April–September 2026 initiative on Styx Mill Road aimed at improving stormwater performance, strengthening long‑term waterway resilience, and restoring native biodiversity across 300 hectares of new and existing development catchments. Working alongside Corde, Humes supplied a suite of engineered precast solutions — including X14 Engineered‑To‑Order box culverts with tapered ends, short‑length units, and a specialised slag‑mix cement, as well as 600mm concrete pipes and manholes — to support the transformation of the Styx waterway into a healthier, more sustainable ecosystem.
Precision Manufacturing & Collaboration
The project demanded precision manufacturing and tight coordination. Custom tapered culvert units required detailed engineering and careful production by the Humes Hornby team, while specialist Macalloy jointing components sourced from the UK had to be delivered exactly on schedule to avoid installation delays. Meeting the programme’s demands meant re‑working design drawings, shifting production schedules, and taking on additional workload across manufacturing teams — a collaborative effort that ensured every product was delivered in full and on time.
The successful delivery of these highly customised precast solutions reinforced Humes’ reputation for technical excellence and reliability. Corde expressed strong satisfaction with Humes’ service and performance.
