Summerset Retirement Villages – planning for the future in Palmerston North

Topic(s):

An expected 30% increase in 75-year-old plus residents in the Palmerston North region by 2028 has seen Summerset Retirement Villages begin work on what will be their second village in the city. The new ‘Kelvin Grove’ village is being built on a 10.7 hectare block of land and will be developed into more than 300 independent villas, cottages, care and serviced apartments.

When Goodman Construction, the civil contractor for the project, began preparing the site with all the necessary in-ground infrastructure, they turned to the local Humes team to supply several required products - including some of the first concrete pipe manufactured by the new Humes TITAN Radial Press.

“Goodman are a family business started by Rick and Tony Goodman back in the 1960s,” explains Ross Buddle, National Sales Manager for Humes.  “They are based in Waikanae with a branch in the Hawkes Bay. They operate nationally as an earthworks contractor with the scope to complete subdivisions and other civil works … and they are a very good customer.”

“This is a two plus year project for Goodman’s which started for them in late 2024 and will be completed in two stages,” says Dan Leary, Account Manager for Humes. “With approx. 70% of the infrastructure for the site completed, they will require more from us in the new year when they move their current site set up.”

Humes is supplying a range of concrete manholes, concrete pipes, PVC pipe (for the Stormwater and Sewer lines) and some PE pipe. Dan says this project is the first in Palmerston North to utilise the Humes TITAN® Radial Press (RP) concrete pipe (made with an integrated rubber ring during the manufacturing process) with a run of over 200m of 900mm diameter RP pipe.

“This is a significant job for us and progress has been very good,” adds Dan. “Goodman are happy with what we have done for them to date - with more to come!”

Summerset Retirement Villages’ first Palmerston North village - Summerset on Summerhill - opened in 2000. With the addition of Kelvin Grove, the group will have 38 villages from Whangārei to Dunedin. They also own properties in Victoria, Australia.
