Humes 'Double T' Precase Concrete Bridges — Cost-effective and quick to install

As severe weather events become more frequent, the need to repair and replace infrastructure on smaller council roads and privately owned farm roads affected by flooding and storms has increased significantly. Key infrastructure — particularly gravel roads and low-lying bridges — is often damaged during these events, disconnecting farmers and homeowners from emergency support, their communities, and essential services. This is why Humes concrete bridges are increasingly being considered and installed in a wide range of locations and situations.

“Our Humes Double T precast concrete bridges can be supplied in lengths from 6m to 18m anywhere in the country,” says Steve Grenfell, National Business Manager — Rural for Humes. “They are usually site-specific; however, as we are seeing more frequent severe weather events, we have started to stock certain bridge sizes. Liaising with a geotechnical consultant and our team is the best place to start when your infrastructure has been affected.”

Steve adds:

  • “Humes Double T concrete bridge systems are available in lengths from 6m up to 18m and are designed to 0.85 HN loading. They provide a great solution nationwide, from public roading to farm access.
  • We keep selected sizes in stock so we can respond quickly in emergency situations. By working alongside engineers and geotechnical consultants, we ensure the right solution is delivered.”

Mangati Road Bridge — Up and running in four weeks!

In mid-February 2026, the  Ōtorohanga district and surrounding areas in the Waikato were hit by severe flash flooding, resulting in a local state of emergency and significant devastation. On the list of areas affected was the washout of an old bridge on Mangati Road.

“Immediately after the weather had taken its toll on areas of Ōtorohanga, we were able to view the damage to the old bridge,” explains Andrew Stevenson, Engineering Consultant for Ōtorohanga District Council (ODC). “Our Structural Engineer and myself discussed all the options and were both aware of the Humes ‘Double T’ precast bridge. So Humes were one of the first calls we made.”

“We were contacted in mid-February about the damage to the old Mangati Road bridge,” says Steve. “In this case we had a 14m Double T bridge in stock that fitted the bill. We worked with Andrew, the installers and the crane operators to get the bridge to site. Within four weeks the bridge was back up and running which was great effort by everyone involved.”

“Thank you to all involved for the great work and amazing coordination to get this bridge in place in such a short time,” said Andrew.

“The installation went pretty smoothly and the teams were great. Everyone had smiles on their faces and just got stuck in!  A few residents popped down and were over the moon at the progress and how cool it was to see a crane lift a transport trailer.” “Thank you to everyone on site that day and the people behind the scenes including the Humes team — the Community and Otorohanga roading team have enjoyed working with you all.”
